Volunteer

Community Champions

Role Summary

We are looking for people from all walks of life, ages, from ESEA and non-ESEA backgrounds, who can help CHAMPION our new service and extend
On Your Side’s reach to ESEA communities in a voluntary role. Whether you are a seasoned community advocate or newer to advocacy; whether you are a student, support worker, or a manager – if you have a wide reach to ESEA networks, we want to hear from you.
Full training (3-4 hours) will be provided online. You will be supported as a
Community Champion with a peer group system and staff contact. We will
work with you to determine how many hours a week you can champion On
Your Side. If you have further questions, please do get in touch via
info@evresea.com.

Through our community consultation work and partners’ reach – as well as through lived
and professional experience – we know there are many barriers to ESEA people being
able to seek support for the racism and violence we face, such as knowing where to turn
for a safe, confidential space and a space that is culturally competent enough to hold our
issues.
For those ESEA community members for whom reporting is actually an option, there
exist many barriers as well, such as concerns being dismissed by police, workplaces and
other institutions and the re-traumatising impacts of going through a recording process
(which includes not only reporting hate, but also complaints and disciplinary procedures).
There are many people in our communities whom we need to do a better job of reaching,
and we are looking to empower Community Champions, well-embedded in diverse
networks, to help support this vital outreach work.

Community Champions will be expected to complete 3-4 hours of online training. This is
a volunteering role, but we will pay for you to attend training at the equivalent to the Real
Living Wage rate, depending on your UK location. In the training we will cover:

  • what On Your Side does.
  • how to have conversations around race and hate.
  • how to support ESEA communities.
  • advocacy training, meaning: how to plan your approach and time as a Community.
  • Champion, how to see what’s working, and how to support each other as
    Community Champions.

After completing training, we’ll support you to champion the On Your Side service. There are many ways you might do this, such as:

  • Through a social media campaign.
  • Talking with your professional, student or personal networks.
  • Speaking at community meetings.
  • Connecting with local groups.

Champions will be asked to track their activities and work done advocating On Your Side,
and to give feedback at the end of phase 1 of the programme (end of March 2024). We
hope that many Champions will choose to continue in the role past that point too.
As for time commitment, we think anything between 1-4 hours per week volunteering is
possible. It depends on your work, your schedule and your networks.
You will be a crucial part of On Your Side’s success. We need you to spread the word: to
raise awareness of the service among ESEA communities and their supporters.
