Nottinghamshire WI

The Women's Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. The Notts WI lots of fun & laughter with a variety of events and classes with a mix of education and entertainment thrown in. Food & Craft Classes are very popular, Art, Sports - you name it we do it! - and WI Training events. An Annual Quiz and Lunches with entertaining speakers and visits to places of interest in and out of the county. In May we go to the show - the Notts County Show, when the town and country come together for a weekend. We go to Denman College for a weekend every second year and have Day Visits during the year. Our monthly Newsletter - The Hornblower keeps everyone informed. We also organise an annual coach Holiday. Groups within the Mansfield District are: Blidworth and Rainworth (Blidworth Methodist Church) Forest Town (Samworth Church Academy) Mansfield Brookside (Friends Meeting House, Rosemary Street) Mansfield Lindhurst (South Mansfield Community Centre) Pleasley Vale (Turner Hall, Mansfield Woodhouse)

Following retirement from employment, Mansfield Voluntary Service (C.V.S) have given me so much help and advice to start up our community group over 10 years ago. We wanted to get the children in the community a new play park. Without the help of Mansfield C.V.S directing us how to write and prepare a Business plan we wouldn’t have achieved the £68,000 to pay for it.
